                Enjoying the reputation of "the big natural greenhouse" and cradle of the Wa people (wǎ zú 佤族), the city of Lincang (lín cāng 臨滄) lies in the southwest of Yunnan, 50 kilometers north of the Tropic of Cancer. Lincang, so named because of the Lancang River (lán cāng jiāng 瀾滄江) that flows nearby, has a land area of 24, 469 square kilometers. Proud of its gorgeous landscape, lovely climate, colorful cultures and customs of multiple nationalities, Lincang has become a very hot tourist destination in recent year and a most preferred city for studying the folk customs of the Wa people.

                Puer (pǔ ěr普洱) is a prefecture-level city in southern Yunnan province (yún nán shěng 云南省), People’s Republic of China. The name Puer dates back to 1729, but was changed to Simao (sī máo 思茅) in 1950 after the Communist Revolution. In 2007, the original name of Puer was restored. The urban administrative center of Puer is Simao District, which is also the former name of the city itself. Puer is famous for its Puer tea (pǔ ěr chá 普洱茶). A major downturn in the price of tea in 2007 caused severe economic distress in the area. The price of Puer has since recovered and Pu’er tea still contributes much to the income of the area.

                Covering an area of 1002 hectares (3.9 square miles), as the largest lake in Lijiang (lì jiāng 麗江) area, Lashihai Lake (lā shì hǎi 拉市海) is recognized as one of the most important marshes in Yunnan. It is fed by the melting snow from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (yù lóng xuě shān 玉龍雪山). Every year, over 150,000 migrationng birds spend the winter here. The lake is near Zhongdian (zhōng diàn 中甸), and 8 kilometers (5 miles) from downtown Lijiang.

                Lying in the southeast of Yunnan Province (yún nán shěng 云南省), Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture neighbors Baise (bǎi sè 百色) in the Guangxi Province (guǎng xī shěng 廣西省). It is bounded on the south by Burma. Wenshan County, the government seat of the prefecture is about 310 kilometers (193 miles) from Kunming. It is also called the Southern Gate of East Yunnan. The Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is well-known throughout China for its Panax notoginseng, a valuable medicinal material, and is thus also known as the “Hometown of Panax notoginseng” (sān qī zhī xiāng 三七之鄉).
